Message Notes

Words of Trust

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
Luke 23:44-46

It’s very important to take notice of how these words were said.  There were not said in a whisper or a mumble

These words show dependency
  • Jesus last words show dependency.  Jesus being part of the trinity is connected to God the Father.  He does not operate on His own.  Jesus is not independent of the Father, He is interdependent with Him.
  • This is a prayer and when we pray we show our dependance on God

These words show victory
  • This is a victory shout.  Jesus has won.  It doesn’t look that way to his enemies does it?  They were thinking His life is over, His ministry is over, His message is over.”
  • The real truth is Jesus's life was not over, he rose again. Jesus's ministry is not over, the church continues. Jesus's message is not over. 2000 years later we're still talking about it.
  • These words of victory signify that he had completed his mission. He had lived a sinless life and had received the full wrath of God for mankind's sin and become the perfect sacrifice that would allow people to be reconciled to God once and for all. “Father into your hands I commit my spirit.”

These words show Trust
  • Just a short while before this Jesus cried out a different prayer. My god my god why have you forsaken me and now Jesus’s prayer is much different. He says: father, into your hands I commit my spirit. Jesus had seen the father work through his life over and over again. And he knew that he could trust him.

You can trust Him
  • When God says he will do something you can trust that he will.
