Pastor Search Transition Team Needs
There will be some rolls to fill during the interim period as we search for our next senior pastor.  Right now the transition team is looking for a female youth group leader.  This person would attend Wednesday evening youth group, play games, be part of a small group and build relationships with the students. We are also looking for a small groups overseer.  This person would oversee small groups, help raise up new small group facilitators, and assemble new groups.  If you are interested in either of these positions please email transitionteam@thebridgereno.com

Kids Kingdom News
We are finishing up our series, "Out in the Wild; Arctic Chill", and we have been seeing how our words affect others.  We have also  discussed how Jesus wants us to use our words with kindness and not malice.  As always, we want to honor Jesus with our words. As last Sunday was a Snow Day, we will have our Shilling Store this Sunday.  Anyone wanting to volunteer to help with our Mad Hatter's Tea Party please see me in Kids Kingdom.  We have scheduled it for April 28th from 10-2.  Brunch will be served around 11:30.  Parents are welcome.  If you plan to eat with us please let me know so we will be sure to have enough food.  We have Circus Tickets, every child will get one.  These will be handed out this Sunday. We hope to see you in Kids Kingdom on Sunday. -Miss Terry

Message Notes

Words of Humanity

As we continue on in our series with the seven things Jesus said from the cross, today we talk about words of humanity.  Words that show that  Jesus was not only fully God but fully man.

Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
John 19:28-29

Jesus is fully God AND fully man.
Jesus as God:
  • Was with God in the beginning at creation (John 1)
  • Commanded the weather (Matthew 8)
  • Turned water into wine (John 2)
  • Healed the sick (John4)
  • Cast out demons (Mark 5)
  • Made the paralyzed walk (Luke 5)
  • Made the blind see (Matthew 9)
  • Made the mute speak (Matthew 9)
  • Fed thousands with one boys lunch (John 6)
  • Walked on water (John 6)

Jesus as man:
  • Slept because he was tiered (Matthew 8)
  • Asked questions (Luke 2)
  • Cried and felt emotions (John 11)
  • Felt sorrow and anxiety  (Matthew 26)
  • Got hungry (Matthew 4)
  • Got thirsty (John 19)

During the worst time in His life, Jesus focused on scripture
Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
John 19:28-29

Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.
Psalm 69:20-21

Jesus felt spiritual thirst
Jesus has been on the cross for six hours he has taken the full punishment for all of mankind’s sin.  He has felt the Father turn his back on him.  “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.”  Is it possible that Jesus is feeling the same thirst that we feel without the Father.  The same spiritual thirst that we experience when sin separates us for God. I believe it is possible

Only Jesus can satisfy
On the last and greatest day of the festival , Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.
John 7:37-38

Come to Jesus and experience the living water.

Small Groups Talk About It

Discussion Questions
  1. Go around the group and ask how much water each person drinks in a day? Also ask if they carry a hydro flask.
  2. Have you ever been somewhere (like camping or hiking) where you ran out of water?  What happened?
  3. Read John 19:28-29. Didn’t Jesus refuse to drink the wine a few hours earlier? (see Matthew 27)  Why is this different?
  4. What does Jesus being thirsty tell us about His humanity?  Is he God or is he man?  How is it possible that he is both? What evidence do you have to support he is one of the other, or both?
  5. In the passage is says “so that scripture would be fulfilled.”  What scripture is the writer referring to?  Why is it significant that Jesus is aware of this at the moment?  What can we learn from that?
  6. What other Old Testament passages do you know that speak about Jesus’ death on the cross?
  7. When you are going through unpleasant circumstances do you meditate on scripture? Why or why not?
  8. In the passage when Jesus said he was thirsty do you think it had a bigger meaning that just physical thirst?  Why or why not?
  9. Read John 7:37-38. How is it that Jesus may give someone “living water.”  What did he mean?  Who else did he tell this to?  How can you share this living water with your oikos
