Message Notes

Words of Love and Compassion

When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So, this is what the soldiers did.
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.”
John 19:23–27

Jesus and His Love
Love pays attention.
When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her...
John 19:26
She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
Gensis 16:13
Love empathizes with others pain.
Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
Luke 2:34–35
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Matthew 9:36
Love provides for needs.
When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.”
John 19:26–27
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
Romans 8:31–32

Two Important Applications
I must love and care for my family.
“Honor your father and your mother...
Exodus 20:12
Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
1 Timothy 5:8

I must Love as Jesus Loved.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”
Philippians 2:3–8
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.
John 13:35

Bottom Line: Love Puts Others First.

Small Groups Talk About It

Discussion Questions
  1. Read John 19:23-24. Talk about what it would have been like to be one of the soldiers. What do you think it was like for Jesus to see them gamble over his last earthly possession?
  2. Read John 19:25. What would have motivated these women to be at the cross? Would you have been there?  What do you think it was like for Mary, Jesus' mother? What about John-the only disciple who was there?
  3. Read and discuss John 19:26-27. What was Jesus doing? Why did John respond as he did?
  4. Love pays attention. What did Jesus pay attention to for his mother and for John?  Read Gen. 16:13:  Talk about the "God who sees" in your life.  What does that mean for you and others?
  5. Love empathizes with the Pain of Others. How did Jesus empathize with our pain?  What makes it harder or easier for you to empathize with the pain of others?
  6. Love Provides for Needs. Read and discuss 2 Corinthians 8:9; Phil. 2:5-8. What is the attitude that we need to be involved in the lives of others?
  7. What are the implications of loving this way in our family?  Read 1 Timothy 5:8.
  8. What are the implications of loving this way in our church family? How is John a model for the church to follow?  Read 1Timothy 5:1-2; Romans 12:13
  9. What are some ways that we can do better at loving one another?  What are some of the challenges that you must overcome in loving those inside and outside the church?
  10. Pray for each other...
