Hope everyone is having a great week and staying warm.  More snow is on the way.  Ms. Crystal is searching for just the right new series for us.  More to come on that.  In the next few weeks I will be giving every family a new registration form.  This is so we can update our files.  Some people have moved and we need to update everything.  If you could fill these out and get them back to me I would appreciate it  .  Thanks and have a great rest of your week.  See you all on Sunday.

Message Notes

Jesus Feeds 5000

How would you finish this sentence?  The Son of Man came ___________.

The New Testament completes the sentence like this.  “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)  “The Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” (Luke 19:10).  And “the Son of Man came eating and drinking.” (Luke 7:34).

The first two statements describe why he came.  He came to serve, he came to seek and save.  But the third statement describes how he came.  How did Jesus come, he came eating and drinking.  So much so that he was accused of overindulging.

Meals mattered to Jesus. They were a place where Jesus did ministry and built relationships. Today we are going to look at an unexpected meal that Jesus participates in and teaches a valuable lesson to those there.

Our scripture for today: Luke 9:10-17

After returning to Jesus from a short term mission trip he sent them on Jesus takes disciples to the countryside for some rest.  The crowds find out he is there and they come out to see him.

but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.
Luke 9:11

Jesus welcomed them, he wanted them there so he could use it as a teaching moment.  When the crowd become hungry and tired the disciples want to send them away.  But Jesus tells the disciples to feed them.

He replied, “You give them something to eat.” They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.”
Luke 9:13

Jesus has brought the crowd AND the disciples out here to teach them that he is enough.  They don’t need to look anywhere else. The disciples forgot they were standing in front of the one who has unlimited resources.

Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied.
Luke 9:16

You see in the end, Jesus provides everything they need to get the job done.  They just should have asked Him.

Soon Jesus would task the apostles with evangelizing the entire world which would surely be an impossible task with out the power of Jesus himself. When God calls us to do something for his sake, he provides us with what we need, with what we do not have in ourselves, so that we are able to carry out his will—not in our own strength but in his. Jesus is more than enough.

He is more than enough for you, he is more than enough for your oikos, and he can provide what you need to share your faith with your oikos. Jesus is more than enough.

Small Groups Talk About It

  1. Have you ever been in a position where you did not have enough.  Enough food for the week, enough money for rent/bills, enough gas to make it to work?  Share the story.
  2. How has God provided for you when you were in need?
  3. How would you finish this sentence?  The Son of Man came… How does the New Testament finish that sentence? See Mark 10:45, Luke 19:10, and Luke 7:34.  What is similar about those statements and what is different?
  4. Read Luke 9:10-11. Why does it say, “When the apostles returned?”  Where were they and what were they doing?  Why do you think Jesus took them away out to the countryside? If He wanted to be alone, why did he “welcome the crowds.”
  5. Read Luke 9:12-13. Why did the disciples want to “send the crowd away?”  Do you think Jesus really intended for the disciples to feed the entire crowd? If not, why do you think he told them to do so?
  6. Read Luke 9:14-17. What is your first reaction to the end of this story?  What was so spectacular about how much was left over?  What was Jesus trying to teach the crowd?  What was Jesus trying to teach the apostles?
  7. What are your hesitations about sharing your faith with your friends, neighbors, family, coworkers, (oikos)?  How might sharing a meal with them help that be more comfortable?
  8. Do you believe that Jesus is asking you to “feed” (share the gospel) your oikos?  When was the last time you asked him to give you what you need to share your faith with them? Pray with the group together and ask God for what you need, and more, to share with your oikos.
