Message Notes

Plan Ahead

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
1 Timothy 6:6–10

Why It Matters So Much
He is the Owner
Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.
1 Chronicles 29:11
I am the Manager
Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. “After a long time, the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
Matthew 25:14–19
I will live with the Consequences
But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
Luke 12:20–21
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.
Galatians 6:7
Law of the Harvest: Sow Now, Reap Later and Reap Greater

How To Begin.
  • Find Out Where It's Going
  • Decide Ahead Where It's Going
    • Give.
      • Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops
        Proverbs 3:9
    • Save.
      • The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.
        Proverbs 1:20
  • Live on the Rest
    • For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat."
      2 Thessalonians 3:10
  • Pay Attention to Where It's Going
    • And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
      Colossians 3:17
    • Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So, we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
      Hebrews 13:5–6

Bottom Line: You Need to Know Where Your Money Goes

Small Groups Talk About It

Small Groups Talk About It
Money is a very emotional topic to talk about, especially in light of what is happening in our world today.  Please be sensitive to where those in your group are as you lead these discussions.

  1. What words and emotions come to mind when you think on the word "budget'?

  2. What has been your experience with budgeting-whether positive or negative? How successful have you been with it?

  3. Read Luke 12:28-33. What is the main thing Jesus is trying to get across?  How does that apply to your life today?  How does that apply to how you handle your money?

  4. Discuss this statement: "You need to know where your money goes."

  5. Read Matthew 25 14-19. What is expected of someone who manages another person's property?  How does being a manager affect how you deal with God's property?

  6. Read Galatians 6:7: How does the Law of the Harvest (Sow Now, Reap Later and Reap Greater) affect our attitude about money?

  7. How many of you keep an account of where you spend your money?  Why or Why not?

  8. Bill said a budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.  What do you think?

  9. How do you feel about the three areas of: Give first, Save next, then Live on the Rest?

  10. How many of you will keep up with all you spend this week?  Pray for each other on this area of budgeting.
