Message Notes

Whose Is It

October 29, 2023

David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, “Praise be to you, O Lord, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head overall. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. O Lord our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name, it comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you.
1 Chronicles 29:10-16

It ALL Belongs to Him.
1 Chronicles 29:10-11

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.
Psalms 24:1-2

…for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.
Psalm 50:10

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

It ALL Comes from Him.
Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.
1 Chronicles 29:12

But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you.
1 Chronicles 29:14–16

You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth…
Deuteronomy 8:17-18a

My Response: Gratitude and Dependence.
Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.
1 Chronicles 29:13–14

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Colossians 3:17

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So, we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Hebrews 13:5–6

Three Realities….
  • It’s not mine, it all belongs to God.
  • I am not entitled to it but entrusted with it.
  • I am responsible to Him for how I use it.

Bottom Line: When It’s My Stuff; It’s Never Enough. When it’s His Stuff; then He Is Enough.

Small Groups Talk About It

Small Groups Talk About It
Money is a very emotional topic to talk about, especially in light of what is happening in our world today.  Please be sensitive to where those in your group are as you lead these discussions.
  1. If you’re willing to, share one of the mistakes that you have made with money?  What did you learn from that mistake?  What is the best piece of money advice that you have ever heard about money?  What is one piece of advice you would give to someone about money?
  2. Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-16: What is the tone of David’s words?  What is he trying to communicate to God and to the people?
  3. Read 1 Chronicles 29, 0-11, Psalm 24:1-2, & Psalm 50:10: What are all of these verses teaching?   If this is true, then what are the implications of this for your life? Is this easy or hard for you?
  4. Read 1 Chronicles 29:14: What is the difference between God owning everything and being the source of everything? How do these two principle mesh with what our culture teaches us?
  5. Read Deut. 8:17-18: Discuss what this means for us today.  What is the source for our ability to provide?
  6. Bill finished the message by talking about three realities.  Discuss them.
  7. If I am a manager and not an owner, how will that affect the way I view and use the money and resources that I do have?
  8. What are some of the ways we can demonstrate that we have yielded to His ownership and have acknowledged Him as the source of what we have?
  9. What do you think our church would look like if we truly lived like it all belonged to God and not to us?
