Message Notes

The Persistent Widow

July 23, 2023

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ “For some time, he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’ ” And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you; he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
Luke 18:1–8

The Characters
He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ “For some time, he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’
Luke 18:2–5
The Judge:
  • Powerful, Unjust and Uncaring
The Widow:
  • Helpless, Desperate and Persistent

The Contrast
And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you; he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
Luke 18:6–8
God:
  • Powerful, Caring and JUST

The Point
Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
Luke 18:1

Answer Us!
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
Matthew 7:7–8
Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.
Jeremiah 33:3

Give us Good Gifts!
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
Matthew 7:11
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
James 1:17
God answers of our prayers exactly like we would answer our prayers if we knew what he knew.
- Tim Keller

Deepen our Relationship
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:15

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Hebrews 4:15–16

Bottom Line: Persistent Prayer Produces Perseverance

Small Groups Talk About It

Discussion Questions:
  1. Think about the last month. When have you been tempted to pray less or not pray altogether? What has caused you to lose heart and want to give up in prayer and perhaps even your faith?
  2. The context for Jesus’ parable is the teaching of His kingdom. It had already been inaugurated in His coming to earth, but it had not yet come in its fullness. Luke 17:21, 25-30. We still live in the time between Jesus first coming and the time he will return.  This parable is still relevant today.
  3. Read Luke 18:1-8. What stands out to you in this parable? What does Jesus say is the point of the parable?  Read Luke 13:1.
  4. Read and discuss Luke 18:2-5.  What is the point of the judge and the widow?  What does Jesus want to teach us about them?
  5. Read and discuss Luke 18:6-8. Notice Jesus is contrasting, not comparing, God to the unjust judge.  How is God different from the judge?  What does he promise us?
  6. In what ways are God’s chosen ones like the widow and in what ways are we different from the widow?
  7. Read and discuss Luke 18:1. How does persistent prayer help us not to give up? How should we respond to unanswered prayer?
  8. Read Romans 8:15, Romans 12:19, Luke 22:42, Hebrews 4:15-6:2, Peter 3:8-9.  Discuss how these verses relate to our prayer life and how they can encourage us to “always pray and not give up”.
  9. Discuss the following Tim Keller quote:
    1. God answers of our prayers exactly like we would answer our prayers if we knew what he knew.
  10. Share prayer needs and pray for each other, especially in the areas where you face the most discouragement and challenge today.
