Bridge Building in a Divided Culture
Communicate Effectively
At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Gentiles believed.
Acts 14:1
But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, where they continued to preach the good news.
Acts 14:6–7
But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: “Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them. In the past, he let all nations go their own way. Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.
Acts 14:14–18
He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Matthew 5:45
Live Purposefully
So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders.
Acts 14:3
In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.
Acts 14:8–10
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.
Philippians 1:27–28
Anticipate ResistanceBut the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders. The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles. There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them. But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, where they continued to preach the gospel.
Acts 14:2–7
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Ephesians 6:10–12
Never Give Up
Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe. They preached the gospel in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.
Acts 14:19–22
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9
Bottom Line: Our Lives Must Reflect Our Message
Small Groups Talk About It
Discussion Questions:
Preparation for next week’s discussion, please do the following:
Read Acts 14:1-22 three times before small group meeting.
Read 1 Timothy 1:12-16
- Do you think we now live in a divided culture? What does that mean to you? What are the ways that you see the church respond to this that is helpful and what are some of the ways that our response is hurtful? What do you think motivates most people in our culture?
- Was there anything from Acts 14:1-22 that heard or understood for the first time or something that caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?
- Read Acts 14:1-7. What stands out to you in these verses about Paul and Barnabus? What stands out to you about the Jews and the Gentiles who were there? What did God do to confirm the message? How and why does the message of the gospel divide people?
- Read Acts 14:8-18. What happened as Paul was speaking in Lystra? How did the crowd respond? What did Paul and Barnabus do when they understood what was happening? What stands out to you about the content of their message? Compare it with the message Paul gave in Acts 13:26-39. Why is the content do different?
- Read Acts 14:19-22. What stands out in these verses? What would motivate Paul to keep going? What might be your response? What is his point in 14:22? How does that apply to us today?
- Bill spoke about four things from this passage: Which one is a strength for you and which is a bigger challenge?
- Communicate Effectively
- Live Purposefully
- Anticipate Resistance
- Never Give Up
- Spend Time praying for each other.
Preparation for next week’s discussion, please do the following:
Read Acts 14:1-22 three times before small group meeting.
- In the message we saw Paul and Barnabus facing both opposition and physical persecution as they faithfully carried out the ministry God gave them. As we think about the possibility of Christians facing more opposition in the future, it’s helpful to take a look at how Jesus responded to those who were indifferent or outright hostile to Him. What do you notice about Jesus’ attitude toward people and His response to them in the following passages?
- How might what you learn about Jesus in these passages help you prepare for opposition, know how to respond to those who don’t agree with us and work to share the Gospel with people?
- Matthew 9:35-38
- Luke 9:51-56
- John 11:32-36
Read 1 Timothy 1:12-16
- How does the Apostle Paul’s understanding of his past and what God do for him impact his viewpoint of others?
- How does your past help you understand the resistance that others have to the gospel?
