Message Notes

But God Raised Him

Pastor Bill West
April 9, 2023

The Significance of the Resurrection
Historical Reality
The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.  When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.
Acts 13:27–31

After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
Acts 1:3

“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.
Acts 9:5

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
1 Corinthians 15:3–8

Heart of God
We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: “ ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father.’ The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: “ ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’ So it is stated elsewhere: “ ‘You will not let your Holy One see decay.’ “For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.
Acts 13:32–37

Now as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and said to them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!
Matthew 20:17–19

Hope Now and in the Future
Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.
Acts 13:38–39

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Revelation 21:1–5

Bottom Line: The Resurrection is the Basis For the Hope We ALL NEED!

Small Groups Talk About It

Discussion Questions:
  1. What are some explanations you have heard about the resurrection?
  2. Share how you came to believe in the resurrection of Jesus?  How would you talk about it to someone else?
  3. Read Acts 13:13-25. Where is Paul and his companions on the Sabbath? To whom is he speaking? What is the content of his message?
  4. Read Acts 13:26-31. What does Paul begin to talk about in these verses? What does he emphasize? Read Acts 9: 3-5. What convinced Paul to follow Jesus?
Read 1 Corinthians 15:1-8. Why does Paul mention these people by name? Why are eyewitnesses so important to the reality of the resurrection?
  5. Read Acts 13:32-37. What is Paul emphasizing in this part of his message? What is the significance of God declaring the resurrection hundreds of years before Jesus accomplished it? What do we learn about God from this?
Read Matthew 20:17-19. Why would Jesus say this to His disciples?
  6. Read Acts 13:38-39. Discuss the significance of this verse for them and for us. What is the difference between forgiveness and justification?  How does the resurrection accomplish both? Hope does the resurrection bring Hope to your life for today and the future? What are some practical ways it helps you today?
  7. Read Revelation 21:1-5. How can the resurrection bring hope to our world today and for the future when there seems to be so little hope?
  8. Spend Time praying for each other.
