Unstoppable: When You Face the Worst

The Charges
Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen, but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke. Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.” So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin. They produced false witnesses, who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law. For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.” All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel. Then the high priest asked him, “Are these charges true?”
Acts 6:8–7:1

  1. He speaks against the “Holy Place.”
  2. He speaks against the Law.

Stephen’s Response (Grace and Power)
The Issue is His Presence not A Place
  • Abraham:
He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child. Acts 7:5
  • Joseph:
Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him Acts 7:9
  • Moses:
Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals; the place where you are standing is holy ground. Acts 7:33
  • Solomon:
But it was Solomon who built the house for him. “However, the Most High does not live in houses made by men. “‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?” Acts 7:47–49

You Have Disobeyed the Law
This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’ This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us. Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,
Acts 7:37–39

You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it.
Acts 7:51–53

Their Reaction (Anger and Destruction)
When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep. And Saul was there, giving approval to his death. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.
Acts 7:54–8:3

Stand Firm with Grace and Power
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 2:1

  1. Understand the Gospel.
  2. Know the Scriptures.
  3. Look to Heaven.

Small Groups Talk About It

Discussion Questions
  1.  Have you ever faced false accusations?  How did you respond? What was the outcome?

  2. Read and discuss Acts 6:8-15. How is Stephen described?  How does one “full of grace and power?” What does it look like?  Why did that bring opposition? What accusations are brought against Stephen?  What’s the significance of the accusations?

  3. Read and discuss Acts 7:1-8. What is Stephen’s point about God’s call to Abraham in answering the accusations about the law and the temple?

  4. Read Acts 7:8-16.  What is Stephen’s point about Joseph and his role in God’s plan and answering their accusations about the law and the temple?

  5. Read Acts 7:30-39.  What is Stephen’s point about Moses and his role in God’s plan for Israel and answering their accusations about the law and the temple?

  6. Read Acts 7:51-53.  What is the point Stephen is making about the law and what they have done with it?  What is Stephen saying about their accusations?

  7. Read Acts 7:54-8:1. Why are they so angry? How does Stephen respond with grace and power?  What does God allow Him to see? What is their response? Why was Stephen able to stand firm in Christ and respond as he did?

  8. How can you and I live more like this today?

Dig Deeper:  preparation for next week’s discussion, please do the following:

Monday and Tuesday: Read Acts 8:4-40
  • What stands out to you in vs 8:4-8?
  • Acts 8:9-25 How does God work in the life of Simon the magicians? How did the Apostles respond when they heard that the Samaritans were receiving the word of God? How does Simon respond to Peter and John?  What did Simon misunderstand?
  • What do you learn from Acts 8:26-40? What amazing thing does the Holy Spirit do in this section with Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch?  What part of the Scripture was He reading from?
  • What is the significance of this work in THIS man’s life? Why do you think the eunuch brought up baptism?
  • Acts 8:38-40: What’s your thoughts about what God did with Simon?  How do you suppose both Simon and the Ethiopian responded?

Wednesday: Read Isaiah 53:1-12. Try to read this passage as the Ethiopian Eunuch may have read it for his very first time
  • What do these verses teach us about the coming Messiah?
  • What descriptions stand out to you about the Messiah? How did Jesus fulfill these while he was on earth?

Thursday: Read James 2:1-13
  • What issue does James address here?
  • In what way was the early church tempted to show prejudice?
  • How is God addressing the issues of prejudice and partiality in the Book of Acts?
Read Acts 1:8 and John 3:16
  • What do these verses teach us about God’s heart for people?
  • Who are God’s favorites?
  • Take a few moments to ask God to show you where you are most tempted when it comes to prejudice and partiality?
  • How can you/we overcome this sin in our lives?

Friday: Reread Acts 8:4-40
  • What new thoughts, ideas, or questions do you now have?
  • How would you describe the way the Apostles responded to non-Jews coming to faith?  Why did they go investigate it?
  • What would you say God is up to in this passage that we need to know and understand today?
