Unstoppable: Promise Fulfilled

Pastor Bill West
January 15, 2023

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.”
Acts 1:4

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
John 16:7

The Coming of the Spirit
Filled with His Power.
Pentecost:
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Acts 2:1-2

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:13–14

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
1 Corinthians 6:19

Overwhelmed by His Presence.
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Acts 2:3–4

Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
Acts 2:12–13

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,
Ephesians 5:18

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
Romans 8:16

Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”
Galatians 4:6

Spoke A Unified Message
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
Acts 2:5–11

For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 14:2

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations…”
Matthew 28:19

Bottom Line:We are Empowered to Be His Witnesses.

Small Groups Talk About It

Discussion Questions
  1. What words come to mind when you think about the Holy Spirit?  How would you describe the Holy Spirit to a new believer?  …to an unbeliever?

  2. Read and discuss Acts 2:1-4.   What stands out to you?  What are some of the key words that you hear?

  3. Share a time when you felt overwhelmed by God’s presence in your life?

  4. Read Ephesians 1:13-14, Galatians 2:20 and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. What do these verses teach about the Holy Spirit? What are your thoughts about God himself, through the Holy Spirit, living within you? What are the implications of this?

  5. Read and discuss Acts 2:5-11. Why did the crowd show up here? What is amazing about these verses? How many different people/geographies are listed here? What were the disciples all speaking about? What’s the significance that they all gave the same message but spoke in different languages?

  6. Read 1 Corinthians 14:2. How does this verse relate to what is happening? Are they the same thing or something different?  How do you know?
