Message Notes

Rooted: What is My Purpose - Part Two

Pastor Bill West
November 6, 2022

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Matthew 25:31–46

Service (Not Serve Us) Mentality
But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:25–28

If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
John 13:14–17

Hands on (Not Hands Off) Approach
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’
Matthew 25:35–36

But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
1 John 3:17–18

…and if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.
Isaiah 58:10

Compassionate Focus
And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
Matthew 25:38–40

Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
Luke 10:36–37

Bottom Line: To Love and Serve Jesus by Loving and Serving the Least of These!

Small Groups Talk About It

Rooted: What is My Purpose - Part Two Discussion Questions

  1. Read and discuss: Matthew 25:31-46.  What stands out to you in this passage? What concerns or questions do you have from this passage?

  1. Read Matthew 25: 34-39 again:  Discuss the action words used.  What does this tell you? Describe the response of the “sheep” to what Jesus said.  What does this tell you? How would you define the “poor and needy” in our community?

  1. Read Matthew 20: 25-28 and John 13:14-17. How did Jesus demonstrate a service mentality?  In what ways do we often have a “serve us mentality” in the church? How do we make the change?

  1. Read 1 John 3:17-18.  Pastor Bill said: Christian culture today seems to place more value on what you say you believe that on what you do.  Do you agree or disagree? Which one do you think is more important?  What are some groups or segments of society that the church often has a “hands off” approach with as opposed to “hands on”.

  1. Read Isaiah 58:10: What does it mean to “spend yourself”?

  1. Read and discuss Matthew 25:40 and 25:45-46. What is the difference between the sheep and the goats in this passage?  Where does this difference lead to? Who are the least of these in our world today?

  1. Bill said the “least of these” in this passage is specifically other Christians-what does this tell you? What are some other verses that tell us that we are to love and serve even those who are not Christ followers?  See Luke 10: 25-27

  1. Pray for God’s protection for our church and each other?

  1. Pray that we would be more effective in sharing the gospel with power and hope for a lost world?
