Message Notes
Rooted: What is My Purpose - Part One
Pastor Phil Burdoin
October 30, 2022
What is the purpose of life. If you went out on the street and asked that question you would probably get many different answers. Some people would say the purpose of life is just to survive as long as you can. Some people might say the purpose of life is to experience as much as you possibly can. Some people would probably say there is no purpose to life. And some people would say the purpose of life is to achieve something great.
What did Jesus tell his followers to do with their lives?
It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
Your purpose comes from knowing who you are.
Your purpose comes from knowing who God is.
The purpose of life is to love and serve others.

John 13:1-5
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13:12-17
Your purpose comes from knowing who you are.
In order to find your purpose in life you need to know who you are, and deeper than that you need to know where you came from. Scripture clearly tells us you were created by God and for God.
For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Colossians 1:16
You came from God, he alone created you and therefore he alone can give you purpose.
Your purpose comes from knowing who God is.
The Pharisees had a wrong picture of God and therefore struggled when it came to their real purpose in life. Even Jesus apostles sometimes had a wrong picture of who God is which also caused them to stumble when it came to the real purpose of life.
You will never know your purpose in life unless you know the one who created you.
You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

John 13:13-15
Jesus says “I set an example for you at this meal, that you should also wash one another’s feet. The very thing that you consider to be completely beneath you.” But he also points out a perspective issue that we often have when it comes to our purpose.
“You call me teacher and Lord, and you’re right, I am both those things.” But he clarifies an important detail by reversing those words. “Now that I your Lord and teacher have served you, you need to serve others.”
Jesus points out that our perspective on the purpose of life is often flipped upside down. He says that I, the Lord of the universe, the one who created everything,
I'm the one who defines your purpose and that purpose is to love and serve others.

John 13:16-17
Jesus says no servant is greater than his master. I myself have washed your feet, not because you are better than me but because the purpose of life is to love and serve others.
Small Groups Talk About It
Rooted: What is My Purpose - Part One Discussion Questions
1. Who is someone you believe is living with real purpose? Describe what causes you to say that.
2. Talk about a time when you felt like you were living out your purpose in life.
3. Read John 13:1-5. Why do you think the disciples did not wash each other’s feet before the meal if that was the custom? What would you have done if you were there?
4. Compare verse three with verses four and five. Discuss why or why it does not make sense for Jesus to wash his disciple’s feet based on that comparison.
5. What do you think the reaction in the room was when Jesus did this? Look at John 13:6-8 for clues.
6. Read John 13:12-17. Why do you think Jesus might have reversed the words “Teacher and Lord” “Lord and Teacher?”
7. What did Jesus mean by saying “no servant is greater than his master” and how does it specifically apply to what Jesus is trying to teach his disciples here?
8. At the end of these verses Jesus give a conditional promise that IF you do these things, you will be blessed. What does Jesus mean by this blessing? What is the blessing?
9. Where have you seen this blessing in your life or the lives of others that love and serve people?
