Message Notes

Rooted: Why Rooted?

Pastor Bill West
September 25, 2022

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.  Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.  All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.  Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Acts 2:42-47

Christ-Centered Community
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Acts 2:41-42 NIV

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another...
Hebrews 10:24–25

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Acts 4:31

Relationally Connected Community
All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.  Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
Acts 2:44-47a

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.
Acts 4:32

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2

Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
James 5:16

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:8

Externally Focused Community
...praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Acts 2:47

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.
John 13:34-35

Small Groups Talk About It

  1. What is your picture of an ideal church? What do you think it would have been like to be a part of the early church? In what way do we need to be more like them today?

  2. Read and discuss Acts 2: 38-41. Why did Luke tell us how many responded? What is taking place?
What is God beginning to do?

  3. Read and discuss Acts 4:41-43. What stands out to you in these verses? Why do you think the Apostle’s Teaching is the first quality mentioned about the early church gatherings? What do you believe was the purpose of the signs and wonders that are mentioned?

  4. Read and discuss Acts 2:44-47. Why is the word “together” used so much? What does together imply? Would you describe the church today as “together”?

  5. Discuss this phrase: “Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need”. Why do you think the early church did this? How does this apply us today?

  6.  Why did they meet in the temples and then in the homes? What does it mean to “break bread together”? How important is this for the church today?

  7. What qualities described here do you see in our Church? Which ones need more attention?

  8. What do you think it would look like if the Holy Spirit were in total control of your life? What about in the life of our church?

Spend time praying for your group as we enter into this journey together to become more Rooted in our walk with Christ.
