Rooted: Why Rooted?

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.  Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.  All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.  Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Christ-Centered Community
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.  
2 Timothy 3:16-17

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another...

Relationally Connected Community
All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.  Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.

Externally Focused Community

  1. What is your picture of an ideal church? What do you think it would have been like to be a part of the early church? In what way do we need to be more like them today?

  2. Read and discuss Acts 2: 38-41. Why did Luke tell us how many responded? What is taking place?
    What is God beginning to do?

  3. Read and discuss Acts 4:41-43. What stands out to you in these verses? Why do you think the Apostle’s Teaching is the first quality mentioned about the early church gatherings? What do you believe was the purpose of the signs and wonders that are mentioned?

  4. Read and discuss Acts 2:44-47. Why is the word “together” used so much? What does together imply? Would you describe the church today as “together”?
