Wisdom: Care for the Poor

Pastor Grant Morgan
August 14, 2022

Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.
Proverbs 19:17

Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.
Proverbs 21:13

Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court,
Proverbs 22:22

Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.
Proverbs 14:31

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
John 13:34-35

Small Groups Talk About It

  1. Pastor Grant brought up a few passages of scripture that talked about poverty. He also pointed out that the Bible references poverty over 2000 times. Can you think of any Bible verses that talk about poverty?

  2. Think of a time that you may have been broke. Have you ever had a financial need met in your own life? Was it met by a stranger or someone you already knew? Have you helped out a friend in need? Is it easier to help someone you know, or to help a stranger?

  3. Read Proverbs 19:17, Proverbs 21:13, Proverbs 22:22, Proverbs 14:31. Why do you think Solomon brought up this topic so many times? How easy is it for you to “remember” those less fortunate than you? How easy is it to put others' needs before your own?

  4. The church in the book of Acts became known for spending time together and meeting each other's needs. Look around the room at the people in your small group. Do you have barriers up that keep yourself from loving and being loved fully by these people? Jesus told his disciples that the world will know we are his followers by the way we love each other. Read John 13:34-35. Does the love you have for these people around you shine bright enough for the world to see?

  5. What can you do this week to connect with the people around you who may be in need or hurting? What is one way you can get to know someone in different circumstances than yourself?

  6. Take some time to ask God to open your eyes to the people around you, to see them how Jesus saw the people around himself. Ask God to help you be open to not just help others around you but to accept help from the people around you as well.
