If Money Talked: Plan Ahead

Pastor Bill West
May 15, 2022

God is Radically Generous.
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9

The Early Church Practiced Radical Generosity.
And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.
Acts 2:44–45 NLT

And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.
2 Corinthians 8:1–4

Choosing Radical Generosity Today
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
1 Timothy 6:17–19

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7

Priority
Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops
Proverbs 3:9

On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.
1 Corinthians 16:2

Percentage
Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.
Mark 12:41–44

We celebrate amounts, God celebrates percentages!

Progressive
But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.
2 Corinthians 8:7

Bottom Line: God's People Choose Radical Generosity.

Small Groups Talk About It

Money is a very emotional topic to talk about, especially in light of what is happening in our world today.  Please be sensitive to where those in your group are as you lead these discussions.

  1. How does fear inhibit our ability to give? How might addressing fear free us for the task of giving?

  2. Share some of the ways that God has demonstrated His generosity to you and your family.

  3. Read 2 Corinthians 8:1-4: What stands out to you in these verses? What does this tell you about the early Christians?

  4. Read 1 Timothy 6:17-19:  What are some of the dangers of being rich in this present world? Why does God richly provide for us? How does an eternal perspective change our attitude toward money and motivate us to give?

  5. Why does God tell us that giving should be a Priority? (Proverbs 3:9, Deuteronomy 8:17-18a)

  6. Why does Percentages matter more than amounts to God? Read and discuss Matthew 12:41-44.

  7. Why should it be Progressive? Read 2 Corinthians 7-12

  8. What are the benefits of following a giving plan?

  9. Is fear necessarily a bad motive for giving? If not, what are some good fears to prompt giving? How is fear related to joy in giving?

  10. How does realizing that the money we give away is not really ours change our attitude toward giving?
