If Money Talked: Live Within Your Means

Pastor Bill West
May 7, 2022

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
1 Timothy 6:6–10

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
Proverbs 22:7

An Issue of the Heart.
Content Heart
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.
1 Timothy 6:6–8

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Matthew 6:24

Cautious Attitude
Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
1 Timothy 6:9

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
Proverb 22:7

Correct View of Money
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
1 Timothy 6:10

Take Charge of Your Money.
Develop a Plan
The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.
Proverbs 21:5

Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.” One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
Proverbs 13:6-7

  1. Analyze Your Situation.
  2. Build an emergency fund.
  3. Begin to eliminate debt.
  4. Reset Your Priorities. Give-Save-Live.

Learn to say “NO”
Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.
Proverbs 25:28

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
1 John 2:15

Put God First
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:31–33

Bottom Line: Take Charge of Your Money or It Will Take Charge of You!

Small Groups Talk About It

Money is a very emotional topic to talk about, especially in light of what is happening in our world today.  Please be sensitive to where those in your group are as you lead these discussions.

  1. What are your top money worries? How has worrying about money affected you or someone you know?

  2. What is the costliest impulse purchase you’ve ever made on credit? What is the longest time you’ve waited before making a large purchase? How did it feel to finally get it?

  3. Read and Discuss 1 Timothy 6:6-10:  How do these verses relate to the issue of money and debt?  How is debt viewed today?

  4. Read these verses: Proverbs 22:7, 13:7, 21:17: What do you these verses teach about debt?  How is that different from what our culture teaches? What advice would you give to someone about debt?

  5. Discuss this statement:  "It's easy drift into debt; you have to determine to dig out of it."

  6. What are some things you have done to deal with debt in your life?  What do you need to do today?

  7. Discuss within your group some ways to build an emergency fund and/or to start to eliminate debt.  Discuss for a moment:  What could you do if you were debt free?

  8. Read Matthew 6:24-34: How is debt a spiritual issue?

Pray that we will become a people who manage well the resources God has given to us.
