If Money Talked: It’s Not Yours

Pastor Bill West
April 24, 2022

David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, “Praise be to you, O Lord, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.  Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.  We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. O Lord our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name, it comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you.
1 Chronicles 29:10-16

God Owns it All
Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand."
1 Chronicles 29:11–14

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.
Psalms 24:1-2

…for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.
Psalm 50:10

God is the Source of it All
We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you.
1 Chronicles 29:15–16

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
James 1:17

You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth…
Deuteronomy 8:17-18a

Three Realities….
  • It’s not mine, it belongs to God.
  • I am not entitled to it, but entrusted with it.
  • I am to use it for His glory and not for mine.

Bottom Line: It’s Not Yours!

Small Groups Talk About It

Watch the latest Message Summary:

Money is a very emotional topic to talk about, especially in light of what is happening in our world today.  Please be sensitive to where those in your group are as you lead these discussions.

  1. Talk about the way money was viewed as you grew up.  How has that impacted your view of money today?  In what ways, if any, has your view of money changed over the years?

  1. What are some of the ways that money and resources are viewed in our world today?

  1. Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-16: What is the tone of David’s words?  What is he trying to communicate to God and to the people?

  1. Respond to this: God owns everything. True or not true? If true, why does God own everything?  What are the implications of this for your life? Is this easy or hard for you?

  1. Read 1 Chronicles 29:14: Again, what was the source of their generosity?

  1. Read Deuteronomy 8:17-18: Discuss what this means for us today.  What is the source for our ability to provide?

  1. Bill finished the message with talking about three realities.  Discuss them.

  1. If I am a manager and not an owner, how will that affect the way I view and use the money and resources that I do have? What are some of the ways we can demonstrate that we have yielded to His ownership and have acknowledged Him as the source of what we have?

  1. What do you think our church would look like if we truly lived like it all belonged to God and not to us?

Pray that we will become a people who manage well the resources God has given to us.
