WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES
Saturday, February 19 from 9:00-11:00a.
Join us on Saturday, February 19th, as more than 600 people from our community gather early in the morning to make the one-mile walk to our homeless campus on Record Street. We do this to experience the same walk our homeless brothers and sisters make many times a day to receive services at the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission and the organizations dedicated to serving the homeless and those in need. Get more information here.

Message Notes

This Is Us:
Useful Service

Pastor Phil Burdoin
January 23, 2022

How would you rate yourself when it comes to serving others these days?
How would others rate you when it comes to serving them?

Useful service is in line with God’s design.
We were created for it.  We were created to love AND serve one another.  Just like a key was designed to open a lock, just like a wrench was designed to turn a bolt.  You were designed by God with a purpose in mind and serving others with useful service is one of those purposes.  There are things that you were never designed for and when we practice those things our relationship with God suffers.

Jesus sets the example.
so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
John 13:4-5

Jesus doesn’t say anything, he just does it.

I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
John 13:15

Jesus knew his place.  He was aware of his position.  But he chose to set the example of service.

Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God.
John 13:3

Jesus loved people, so he served people.
John writes “he loved his own who were in the world.”  Jesus loved his followers, so he did something about it.  Jesus connected those two things.  Jesus loved people, so he served people. For Jesus, these two things we connected.  Serving people was a natural reaction to loving them. And it made no difference to him what position he had.

The creator of the universe. The one that knows all the stars in space by name, the one who breathed life into Adam’s lungs. The one that holds all things together by the power of his word and knows how many hairs are on each person’s head.  Puts on an apron and kneels down to wash people’s dirty feet. Jesus loved people, so he served them.

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
John 13:12-14

If Jesus is your teacher, then you do what he teaches you.  If Jesus is your Lord, then you give up your life for him. There’s a difference isn’t there? When you give up your life for him, you value what he values. Putting on an apron and taking the role of a servant.

Useful service is in line with God’s design.
When you serve you grow.
When you serve others grow.
Serving is a great way to share Jesus.

Useful service is inline with God’s design.
