Message Notes

This Is Us:
Cultivated Relationships

Pastor Bill West
January 16, 2022

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:26–27

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Acts 2:42–47

Relationship with God
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Acts 2:42

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Mark 1:35

Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Luke 5:15–16

Relationship with Other Followers
All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts…
Acts 2:44–46

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:24–25

Relationship with the Community
(They were) praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Acts 2:47

Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.
1 Peter 2:12

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:16

Relationships Matter Most

Small Groups Talk About It

Watch the Message Summary:

1. Read Genesis 1:26-27: When you hear we are made in God’s image, what does it make you think? How are we different from other parts of creation? If it is relational, then what does that mean for us?

2. Read Mark 1:35-38: Discuss why spending time alone with God was important to Jesus. What do we learn from this?

3. Read Acts 2:44-46: Why do you think the early church began to meet in homes and not just in the temple? Why are you part of a small group?

4. Read Galatians 6:2: What is required for us to carry each other’s burdens? How would you rate your small group on this one?

5. Read Hebrews 10:24-25: What does it mean to consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds? Is our group a good place for this to happen? How can it get better?

 6. Read Acts 2:47: How do you think the early church reached those outside the church? What can we do to accomplish the same thing?

7. Read 1 Peter 2:12 and Matthew 5:16: When you think about reaching out to those outside the church, what do you think about? What is the best way to be light in our world today? Are there any people God has placed on your hearts to reach out to?

8. Pray for each other.
