Why We Exist

Pastor Bill West
January 2, 2022

We’re On a Mission
Our Mission: The Bridge Church exists to build bridges for people to come to Jesus and grow in His grace.

We Go
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Matthew 16:18

Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Matthew 28:19–20

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8

We Gather
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:24–25

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Acts 2:41–42

We Have a Vision
Our Vision: The Bridge Church will be highly valued by the unchurched for its commitment to its neighborhood, community, and world.

We Love
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Matthew 22:36–40

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
1 John 4:9–11

We Serve
Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:42–45

Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.
Jeremiah 29:7

We’re on a Mission and We Have a Vision:
Will You Join Us?

Small Groups Talk About it

  1. What do most people think about when they hear the word church? How has your view of the church changed over the years?

  2. Read Matthew 16:18: Whose church, is it? Why does it exist? On a scale of 1-10, how well is The Bridge meeting what you believe Jesus intended for the church?

  3. Read Matthew 20:19-20 and Acts 1:8: Why do the Scriptures emphasize that we are “to go” and we are to “be my witnesses”? What does that mean? What does this look like for us today?

  4. Read Hebrews 10:24-25 and Acts 2:41-42:  Why is it important for God’s people to gather? What should happen when we do?

  5. What is the mission of The Bridge Church? Why do we exist?

  6. Read Matthew 22:36-40:  What does it mean for us to love God? How do we demonstrate that we love Him? Why is loving God so critical for the church? Why is “loving people” placed alongside “loving God?”

  7. Read Mark 10:42-45 and Matthew 5:15-15:  What do these verses mean for the church in our world today? How do we make them a reality?

  8. Read Jeremiah 29:7:  What does it mean to seek the peace and prosperity of the city where we live? What are some ways we can do that? How does this fit in with the vision we have for The Bridge?

  9. Focus your prayers for The Bridge Church and how we are motivated by this mission and vision in 2022.
