Message Notes
The Bread of Life Part 1
A couple of things to keep in mind as we go through the Gospel of John that can help us interpret it correctly are: John wrote much later than the other gospel writers. This book was most likely written in 85-90 AD. The content is also unique. 85% of it is not found in the other gospels. Also John was not writing this from Jerusalem. He was writing as a church leader in Ephesus.
Today’s scripture: John 6:25-40
When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
The people were looking for Jesus because he had given them free food. He wanted to show them that he had something more to offer.
Jesus rebukes them and points out that they are not paying enough attention to what really matters. You are concerned about your empty stomachs, but you are not focused on what I really have to offer.
Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
The crowd responds with an excellent question. They want to know what it is that they should be doing to please God. This is a fantastic opportunity for Jesus to share the true gospel with them. He tells them the work of God is to believe in Him.
The Gospel message is simple. Trust in Jesus for salvation. We always want to add more to it. But the truth is God’s desire is for us to trust in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus to be reconciled to Him.
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
The crowd was focused on the physical, they desired for Jesus to provide a never ending food supply for them. Jesus is focused on the spiritual. He tells them that he is the provision from God and he is all they need. Do you believe that today? That Jesus is EVERYTHING you need.
For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
The crowd sought Jesus out but they sought him out for the wrong reason. They wanted Jesus to provide, but they wanted him to deliver the wrong provisions. They wanted Jesus to be king, but they wanted no part of a heavenly kingdom, They wanted to be saved, but didn’t recognize they needed salvation, they wanted to be fed, but didn’t know they needed spiritual nourishment because they based their identity on what they needed physically.
We need to be careful to base our identity in Christ alone. All other things will pass away, and in that moment your identity will disappear too. Unless you base your identity off of your relationship with Jesus. Starting today, I invite you to base your identity off the one thing that will never change. Jesus, the bread of life.
