Message Notes

Words of Forgiveness

Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”
Luke 23:32–38

Jesus Models Forgiveness
And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”
Luke 23:34–37
For he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah 53:12
But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
Luke 6:27–28

Jesus and Forgiveness
We ALL need to be Forgiven.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.
Luke 5:20–25
We ALL need to Forgive.
… forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.”
Matthew 6:12
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”
Matthew 18:21–22

Forgiveness Always Costs
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 4:9–10

Small Groups Talk About It

Discussion Questions
  1. We tend to remember the Final Words of people that we love say to us before they die-have you ever experienced this?
  2. Read Luke 23:32-38. Why would Jesus speak words of forgiveness first from the cross? What would you have said first?
  3.  Jesus taught a lot about forgiveness. Read Luke 5:22-24 & 7:48-50. How did religious leaders respond when Jesus "forgave sins"?  How do you think the individuals responded? Do you think we need to be forgiven?
  4. Read and respond to Matthew 18:21-22 & Luke 17:3-5. Why is forgiving others so important for us? What happens when we do not forgive? Why is forgiveness so hard for us to do sometimes?
  5. Read Luke 23:32-24 again. Who is the "them" that Jesus asks the Father to forgive? Why would He do that?
  6. Read Romans 5:8 & 1 John 4:9-10. Respond to this statement: Forgiveness Always Cost Something:  Why was Jesus' death necessary for our forgiveness?  What does it cost us when we forgive others?
  7. What is your greatest struggle with forgiveness today? Is it believing that you need it or that God can forgive you or that you should forgive someone who has wronged you?
  8. Pray for each other...
