Message Notes

Mary, With Us in Our Fear

Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel, which means God With Us!
Isaiah 7:14

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
Luke 1:26–38

Troubling Encounter
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
Luke 1:26–29

Difficult Message
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.
Luke 1:30–33

Honest Doubts
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
Luke 1:34

Clear Answer
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For nothing will be impossible with God.”
Luke 1:35–37

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.”
Luke 1:11–13

Willing Submission
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
Luke 1:38

Mary’s Faith Slowly Replaced Her Fear When She Knew God was With Us!
He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
Luke 22:41–42

Small Groups Talk About It

  1. What Christmas traditions do you remember growing up? What are your traditions now?

  2. Read and discuss Luke 1:26-29. Talk about what kind of emotions you think Mary was experiencing as the angel was talking to her? What was Mary’s background and situation?  Why do you think God choose Mary for this?

  3. Read and Luke 1:30-33. Discuss all of the titles given to the child Mary would have? Is there any that surprise you? Which one stands out to you?

  1. Read Luke 1:34. What do you think about the Virgin Birth?  Why was it necessary? What questions/doubts do you have about this exchange?

  1. Tim Keller says that Mary is an example of how we come to faith.  What do you think about this statement?  What can we learn from Mary about our doubts and struggles?

  1. Are there any "impossible situations" that you are facing now?  What is the response that you think God is looking for from you?

  1. Discuss this statement: many people want a God they can figure out and agree with.

Mary submitted to God not really knowing what was ahead for her.  She seemed to say yes to these two questions.  What about you?

  1. Are you willing to obey anything the Bible tells you to do?

  1. Are you willing to trust God in anything He sends your way whether you understand it or not?
