Kids Camp 2023
July 17-20 @ 6:00p-8:30p
The Bridge Church Reno

Kids Camp is a great opportunity to share the message of God’s word with your children.  We will be exploring Noah and how he trusted God and obeyed his commands in building the Ark and filling it with all of the animals and plants.  Because he obeyed God, God found favor in Noah.  Join us for three nights with a light dinner being provided. Pre-K through sixth grade welcome.  The cost is $15 for the first child in your family and just $5 for each additional child.  There will be an information meeting for parents that want to help on July 2nd after church.

Message Notes

The Rich Fool

July 16, 2023

Someone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” But He said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?” Then He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.” And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. “And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.” ’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’ “So is the man who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
Luke 12:13–21

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”

Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

The Lie
Having more money gives me more life.

The Story
And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”
Luke 12:13–21

What the Story Does NOT Mean:
  • Success and Wealth are wrong.
  • Enjoying what God gives you is wrong.
  • God needs and wants your money.

What The Story Does Mean:
  • Beware of the power of Greed.
  • Use of money reveals what I value most
  • All of my stuff will be left behind.
  • God is both the source and resource of our lives.

The Bottom Line: I can either live for myself or live for God.
This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.
Luke 12:21

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19–21

Small Groups Talk About It

Discussion Questions:
  1. Why do you think money is a tough subject to talk about?  Why do people get upset when the church talks about it?
  2. Have you ever seen money or possessions divide family or friends?  If so, share how.
  3. Read Luke 12:13-14. Why do you think this man made this request of Jesus?  Why do you think Jesus refused him?
  4. Read and discuss Luke 12:15. What is the lie of money and stuff?
  5. How have you seen greed affect others? How have you seen it affect your life? How do you try to deal with it in your life?
  6. Read and discuss Luke 12:16-21. What stands out to you the most here?  How does this man's success affect him? Is it wrong to build bigger barns?  Why does God call him a FOOL? What's the real issue of this man's heart?
  7. What do you think it means to be "rich towards God"?
    • Has my heart been melted by the sacrifice and love of Christ on my behalf?
    • Do I love Rich People?
    • Do I love Poor People?
    • Am I becoming radically generous with my stuff?
  8. Pray that we be a people who are rich towards God and generous with His resources.
