Rooted: The Helper We Have

Pastor Bill West
October 9, 2022

If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
John 14:15–18

Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
John 16:5–15

The Helper is God Himself
If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth.
John 14:15-16

Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
John 16:5–7

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us…. "
Genesis 1:26

Live Within Us
The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
John 14:17–18

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19–20

Convince us of the Truth
All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 14:25–26

When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
John 16:8–11

Empower us to Follow
For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:3–4

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8

The Helper We Have is the Helper We Need!
Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:25

Small Groups Talk About It

  1. When you the about the Holy Spirit, what are some of the things that come to mind? How has your understanding of the Holy Spirit change over the years?

  1. Read Gensis1:26.  What does “us” refer to? Most scholars believe the “us” refers to the Trinity. How would you describe the Trinity to someone who does not know about it?

  1. One theologian has described the Trinity in this way: Discuss this:
  • God is three Persons
  • Each Person is fully God
  • God is One

  1. Read John 14:15-16 and John 16:5-7. in several translations: What word is used for the Holy Spirit? What does this teach us? Why did Jesus have to leave?

  1. Read John 14:17-18 and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. How do you feel about the Holy Spirit living in you? What does this mean?

  1. Read John 16:8-11.  What are some of the things that God has convinced you about sin and righteousness and judgment? What are some truths that now direct your life that you once did not believe?

  1. Read Romans 8:3-4.  What does it mean to live according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh?

  1. What have you or are you learning about living according to the Spirit? What helps you to live according to the Spirit? What takes you away from the Spirit?

  1. In light of today’s discussion, where do you want to invite the Holy Spirit to be more present in your life this week?
