Wisdom: Repairing Broken Relationships

Pastor Bill West
July 24, 2022

The Need for It
He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.
Proverbs 10:18

Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice…
Proverbs 24:17

How To Do It
Watch Your Attitude
A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.
Proverbs 11:12–13

He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
Proverbs 17:9

Learn to Let it Go
Do not testify against your neighbor without cause or use your lips to deceive. Do not say, “I’ll do to him as he has done to me; I’ll pay that man back for what he did.
Proverbs 24:28–29

A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.
Proverbs 19:11

Overcome Evil with Good
If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.
Proverbs 25:21–22

Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Romans 12:19–20

Confront if Necessary
He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
Proverbs. 17:9

Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.
Proverbs 27:5–6

The Heart You Must Have
Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice, or the Lord will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from him.
Proverbs 24:17–18

Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.”
Romans 12:19

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:5–6

Bottom Line: The Willingness to Repair Relationships, Comes from Knowing What Jesus Did for Me.

Small Groups Talk About It

  1. Share a time when you tried to repair a relationship.  How did it go? Why are relationships so necessary and yet so hard?

  1. Talk about a relationship from your past that you were able to work through some conflict. Talk about one where you did not.

  1. Read Proverbs 10:18 and 24:17-18.  What emotions are we likely to have because of the hurts we have received? What actions might we take?  How do we “gloat” when an enemy falls? What causes us to gloat when someone who has hurt us faces hard times?

  1. Read Proverbs 11:12-13. How are we tempted justify our bad actions in response to someone who hurt us? Why do we speak negatively to others about them?

  1. Read Proverbs 24:28-29 and 19:11. What does it mean to “let go” of the hurts in our lives?  How does holding on to those hurts, hurt us?

  1. Read Proverbs 25:21-22 and Romans 12:17-21. What is the purpose of doing what these verses teach?  How hard is it? Has it ever worked for you?

  1. Share a time when you decided to confront someone and a time you decided not to? What was the difference?  Share a time when someone confronted you, what was the outcome?

  1. Read Isaiah 53:5-6 and Ephesians 4:32.
Discus this: The Willingness to Repair Relationships Comes from Knowing What Jesus Did for Me.  How did God take His revenge with Jesus and what does that mean for us?

  2. Pray for the relationships that you need help with at this time.
