Everybody Always: Look at What’s in Your Bucket

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’” “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Mark 10:17-22
He went to the right source.
He wanted more.
What needs to stay in your bucket?
What needs to get dumped from your bucket?
What’s missing from your bucket?
Comfortable people don’t need Jesus, desperate people do.

He asked the right question.
Look at some of the other questions people asked Jesus. “Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar?” “Where are we going to get enough food to feed a crowd this size?” “What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” “Who is my neighbor?” “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” But this one tops them all “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
He wanted more.

We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
