The Bible: The Bible as His-Story

Pastor Bill West
August 1, 2021

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the Word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
(Luke 1:1–4)

He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
(Luke 24:25–32)

The Bible is Truth

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the Word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
(Luke 1:1–4)

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
(1 John 1:1–4)

The Bible is the Truth about Jesus
He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
(Luke 24:25–27)

Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
(Isaiah 53:4–6)

You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!
(John 5:39)

The Bible Stirs the Heart
As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther.
(Luke 24:28–32)

For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
(Hebrews 4:12)

Bottom Line: The Bible is ALL About His Story

Small Groups Talk About It

Watch the Message Summary:

  1.  See if anyone people can name the Books of the Bible in order.  How many books are in the Bible? How many are in the OT, and how many are in the NT?
  2.  What are some of the reasons why people do not trust the Bible?  Has there ever been a time when you did not trust the Bible?    What are some of your personal challenges with the Bible today?  How do you deal with those areas that are confusing and difficult for you?
  3. Read Luke 1:1-4: What stands out to you in these verses?  Why would Luke do such a thorough investigation into the life of Jesus? Why would he write about it?  What did Luke believe about Jesus?
  4. Read 1 John 1:1-4: What is the point John is trying to make? Why does this matter for us today
  5. Read Luke 24: 25-27:  What did these disciples miss about Messiah?
  6. Read Isaiah 53:1-6: Isaiah wrote hundreds of years before Jesus was born.  Who is he describing in these verses, and how do they apply to Jesus?
  7. Read Psalm 22: Who wrote this?  How does the message in the psalm apply to Jesus?
  8. Read Luke 24:28-32:  How did these men respond to the words of Jesus?  Share a time when God’s Word connected with both your head and your heart?
  9. How is the Bible ALL About Jesus and His Story? Why can you believe it?
