Wk 4 Peace- Addressing Anxiety

Matthew 6:25-34; Philippians 4:4-7 and Many More….

 

Matthew 6:25-34
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.

They are new every morning; is your faithfulness.

Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Dealing with Anxiety in a Way That Honors God

Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

 

Celebrate what God has done

Ask God for help

Leave you concerns with Him

Meditate, or think about good things. Things that make you happy… puppies, clouds, whatever….

 

John 14:1

Don’t let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

Bottom Line:

Hold on to God’s Promises Instead of Your Anxiety

Small Group Questions:

  1. Read Matthew 6:25-34, why can worrying be so destructive? What are some things in modern times that we worry about?  Can worrying about them change the outcome for better or worse?  What is the correlation between worry and focus?  Can you think of times when you worried about something only to find out later it wasn’t the big event you thought it would turn out to be?
  2. Read Isaiah 40:8, what is meant by God’s word enduring forever?
  3. Read 2 Corinthians 9:8, what are some things God has blessed us with that perhaps we take for granted? Do we have all that we need?  What do we need?
  4. What does it mean to seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness first? How do we do that?
  5. If someone were to describe you would they say you are a peaceful person? Why or why not?
  6. Darin gave a 3 step, God honoring process to deal with anxiety, 1. Choose to rejoice 2.  Be Gentle 3. Pray.  What are some ways that we can choose to rejoice instead of getting anxious?  What are some examples in our past when we’ve been less than gentle towards others?  Is there anyone/thing God is asking you to pray for?
