Jesus never asked His disciples to remember His birth, but He did instruct them to remember His death and resurrection. He gave the church two visible symbols (which are sometimes called ordinances) as reminders of his death and resurrection. These two symbols are Baptism and Communion.
Why Should I Be Baptized?
1. To follow the example of himself.
At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.
2. Because Christ commanded it.
… Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you … Matthew 28:19-20
3. It demonstrates that I really am a believer.
… and many of the Corinthians who heard him believed and were baptized. Acts 18:8
We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 1 John 2:3
What Is The Meaning of Baptism?
It illustrates Christ’s burial and resurrection.
… Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, He was buried, and He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. 1 Cor. 15:3-4
… having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. Col. 2:12
It illustrates my new life as a Christian.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Cor. 5:17
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Romans 6:4
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith —and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2: 8-9
It is important to understand that baptism doesn’t make you a believer. It only shows that you already believe.
Baptism does not “save” you, only your faith in Christ does that. Baptism is like a wedding ring – it’s the outward symbol of the commitment you have made in your heart!
Who Should Be Baptized?
Every person who has believed in Christ.
Those who received His message were baptized … Acts 2:41
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38
